Food Storage

For longer periods of needs and where permitted, gradually make a reserve of food to last for a long time and that can be used to survive, such as wheat, white rice and beans. These items can last 30 years or more when properly packaged and stored in a cool dry place. One can make a rotation of a part of these items in your inventory to three months.

Properly packaged, low-moisture foods stored at room temperature or refrigerated (24 ° C/75 ° F or lower) remain nutritious and edible much longer than previously thought, according to findings of recent scientific studies. The estimated validity of many products has increased to 30 years or more (see table below for new estimates of shelf life).

Estimates of longevity were based on previous experience and recommendations "best-if-used-by". Although not studied, sugar, salt, sodium bicarbonate (essential for the beans to soak) and vitamin C tablets also store well in the long term. Some basic food needs frequent rotation, such as vegetable oil every 1 to 2 years.

Although there is a reduction in the nutritional quality and taste over time, depending on the original quality of the food and how it was processed, packaged and stored, studies show that even after being stored for a long time, food helps sustain life in an emergency.

For tips on how to best preserve long-lasting products, see Food Supply Long Term.

The following suggestions are amounts for an adult.

Quantity to month Recommended Products Time long-term storage
11.5 kg (25 lbs) Wheat, rice, corn and other grains 30 + years
2.5 kg (5 lbs) Dried grains 30 + years

You may also add other items for long term storage, such as sugar, skimmed milk powder, salt, baking soda and cooking oil. To meet nutritional needs, also store foods containing Vitamin C and other essential nutrients.

Containers recommended for long-term storage include the following:

  • No. 10 cans (available in USA & Canada home storage centers in the Church)
  • Envelopes aluminum (available from Distribution Services of the Church)
  • PET bottles (to dehydrated products such as wheat, corn and beans)

These containers used to package oxygen absorbers, eliminate bugs that arise in food and help preserve the taste and nutritional quality. Packages oxygen absorbers are available online at store.lds.org.

Under certain conditions, you can also use plastic buckets for long term storage of wheat, beans and other dried products.

Warning: The botulism poisoning can occur if moist products are stored in packaging that reduces oxygen. When stored in airtight containers with oxygen absorbers, products must be dehydrated (about 10% or less moisture content).

The storage time can suffer significant influence of the following conditions:

  • Temperature: Store the product at a temperature of 75 ° F/24 ° C or less, where possible. If the storage temperature is higher, makes a rotation with the products, as required to maintain quality.
  • Moisture: Keep storage areas dry. 's best to keep the containers off the ground to allow air circulation.
  • Light: Protect from light cooking oil and products stored in PET bottles.
  • Insects and rodents: Protect products stored in envelopes aluminum and PET bottles from attack by rodents and insects.

First of all while starting out follow the KISS formula. Keep It Simple Silly...just start off making things that are simple and follow recipes exactly before experimenting with them.
I highly recomennd if you have good size freezer buy frozen food when it is on sale and store it. Also, stock up on non perish ables when they are on sale that you like (pasta canned goods etc).
Also buy some good storage containers for left overs. Gladware makes some nice cheap ones but get some good ones. I highly recommend the kind that have the little vent holes on top for when you put stuff in the microwave
